Environment

Norilsk is committed to protecting and managing the environment in which it operates. The company believes that the best way to minimise the impacts of its operations on the environment is by taking the approach of getting it right from the start.

Our key areas of focus are to operate in a sustainable and energy efficient manner, to minimise our impact on the environment and to manage waste effectively.

We are continuing to build on our already sound environmental performance which has resulted in a number of environmental awards. These have included:

• Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence in the Mining Industry
• Western Australian Government Award for Corporate Business Leading by Example
• Finalist, Sustainable Development Leadership in the Minerals Industry section of the National Banksia Environmental Awards
• Australian Mining Prospect Award for Excellence in Environmental Management

In April 2006, the company became a signatory to the Australian Government Greenhouse Gas Challenge. This is a cooperative agreement to voluntarily undertake cost-effective measures that abate greenhouse gas emissions.
